Afrobeat/80s mashup explosion Ijebu Pleasure Club return to Leigh Sawmill Cafe, at the start of their warm-up towards Splore Festival 2019.
Ijebu Pleasure Club will show you how all pop music comes from Mother-Africa!
Imagine an alternative 1987, where a small-town Nigerian covers band have just been told they need to cover hits from American top-40 charts if they want to keep their gig. They don't own the records, but they'll give it a try!
Taking the Afro-funk style of the legendary Fela Kuti and others, this powerhouse band fuses authentic grooves with the 80’s hits that you remember, somehow making them even more danceable in the process.
Along with singer Nuel Nonso Nwachukwu (The New Telepathics), the 11-piece on-stage lineup brings together a good-sized bunch of soul, funk and jazz musicians who’ve collectively played, toured and recorded with Homebrew, Hollie Smith, Katchafire, The Hot Grits, Avantdale Bowling Club, Solaa, Kolab, dDub, and the Ngaruawahia High School Big Band. Yep, THE Ngaruawahia High School Big Band.
With a powerful 5-piece horn section, and tight-grooving rhythms, the group have been energising dance floors and stages around New Zealand for the last 2 and a half years since their packed debut, squeezing on the tiny stage at The Golden Dawn Tavern of Power with just inches to spare.
Be ready to dance, sing, and shake it till you make it.
With rare-groove vinyl support from Azbo.
